Black metal and post rock…not the most likely of bedfellows but the wizards in WA’s Dead Space have managed a coupling of unequalled clarity and smoothness. Not words you might expect to hear used in describing a band in this genre.

Here’s the short version: blackened hardcore that grinds, blasts and surprises. A great mix of guitars and noise over a backdrop of live and noisy drums. Drums reign supreme in the mix and undergo a lot of different changes and sounds, while guitars thunder beside them bathed in sheer gain. Somnium Nox come from Sydney and this black metal group have just dropped Terra Inanis, the bands first full length anf the follow up to last years ‘Apocrypha’ EP. Google translates Terra Inanis as ‘the empty’ and whilst I can’t speak latin, the implied meaning isn’t lost on me because this is as dark, atmospheric and brutal as you could expect.
