‘Talk Less’ is a book available both in print and digital format which chronicles 10 years of the dedicated underground DIY label in Australia. It’s filled with candid and intense photos of shows, living rooms, laneways and garages getting filled with people, music, art and being torn apart!
You probably weren’t there. It wasn’t a big deal. The shows, these releases and artists aren’t trying to get all the attention. They aren’t necessarily trying to break through. They’re trying to be relevant and honest. So this book documents how Matheson and his people brought it all into being via that same organic zero-bullshit way. (*it’s also a great song by Purplene)
So here’s an answer for the question ’what bands should I start listening to?’ WITHOUT the judgement you’d expect from elite scenesters and keyboard warriors. Take it from someone who was around when these bands were, this is where you start. Continue reading DIYFS: Swords Down – A history of emo in Australia*
Real talk. You know what? I dropped the ball several times on some absolutely outstanding releases in 2017 and I just couldn’t find my chill after doing the normal Top 10 list until I’d made some sort of penance. They might not have been the biggest, most hyped or recognised releases across music media this year, it’s just my opinion. Continue reading Its the end of the year as we know it..
Fresh AF. Will satisfy the need for pissed off and darkened punk rock.
Brisbane based outfit Pretty Cruel definitely take it to 11. Continue reading Pretty Cruel – Eat Me Alive (2017)
Black metal and post rock…not the most likely of bedfellows but the wizards in WA’s Dead Space have managed a coupling of unequalled clarity and smoothness. Not words you might expect to hear used in describing a band in this genre.
Don’t come expecting another ‘Deafheaven’ either. This is its own beast entirely. Continue reading Dead Space – The Liquid Sky (2017)
Debut full length from indie rock outfit that owes a lot to the Cure and Balance and Composure..but seriously..how could that ever be a bad thing? Continue reading Love Games – Nothing Ever Moves You (2017)
In the same way that Animals As Leaders utilise dual 7 & 8 string guitars that blur the line between bass and guitar…so too The Omnific blurs that same line with actual bass guitars. Continue reading The Omnific – Kismet (2017)
